Volvo C40 Vs XC40 Recharge – The Electrifying Sibling Rivalry

Volvo has revealed the upcoming C40 Recharge electric vehicle in India. However, Volvo already has a premium EV in its product portfolio in the form of the Volvo XC40 Recharge. As such, here is a quick comparison between the upcoming Volvo C40 Recharge and Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV.

Design

The Volvo XC40 Recharge looks very similar to the standard Volvo XC40 SUV with an almost identical silhouette and common design elements. However, the Volvo XC40 Recharge does have some unique elements such as the completely sealed front grille, and a few 'Recharge' badges to help the model stand out.

On the other hand, the Volvo C40 is a completely new model with a new design. However, the model is distinctly Volvo with its crisp lines and Thor-hammer headlights. Furthermore, the sloping roofline, long bonnet, and high ground clearance lend the model a distinct silhouette.

Powertrain

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is powered by two electric motors together producing 402bhp and 660Nm of peak torque. The juice for these electric motors is stored in a large 78kWh battery pack.

In comparison, the Volvo C40 Recharge uses the same powertrain setup as the Volvo XC40 Recharge with its 78kWh battery pack and 402bhp twin electric motor set up with 660Nm of peak torque.

Interior & Features

In terms of features, both the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Volvo C40 come with a similar set of features including a large 9-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, 12.3-inch digital driver's display, 360-degree surround-view camera, multiple airbags, air purifier and more.

It is also worth mentioning that both the EVs come with Level-2 ADAS with advanced driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot detection, auto emergency braking, and more.

Performance

In terms of performance, the Volvo XC40 Recharge packs a solid punch and can put many sports cars to shame with a 0-100km/h coming up in just 4.9 seconds. However, the top speed of the new Volvo XC40 Recharge is limited to just 180km/h.

Though the Volvo C40 Recharge also uses the same powertrain, it is able to reach 100km/h from a standstill a tad quicker at 4.7 seconds. Like all Volvo passenger vehicles, the top speed of the Volvo C40 Recharge is also limited to just 180km/h.

Range & Charging

Despite the large 78kWh battery pack, the Volvo XC40 Recharge can replenish its battery pack from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 28 minutes using a 150kW DC fast charger. Furthermore, the WLTP range of the Volvo XC40 Recharge SUV is rated at 418 kilometres.

Though the Volvo C40 uses the same powertrain as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the C40 can charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 27 minutes using the same fast charger. Moreover, thanks to its more aerodynamic design, the WLTP range of the C40 stands at 530 kilometres.

Colours

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is available in 5 different exterior shades - Fjord Blue, Crystal White, Thunder Grey, Onyx Black, and Saga Green. On the other hand, the Volvo C40 will be available in all the above colour options except Thunder Grey. Instead, it is available in two other colours - Fusion Red and Cloud Blue.

Thoughts About The Volvo XC40 Recharge & Volvo C40 Recharge

The launch of the Volvo C40 Recharge will not only strengthen the Swedish automaker's electric product portfolio in India but it will also push many premium car buyers to consider EVs. Furthermore, having two electric cars at a similar price point will help Volvo gain dominance in the premium EV sector.
