Uber To Add 25,000 Tata XPRES-T EVs To Premium Taxi Fleet

Uber has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tata Motors which will see the app-based ride-hailing service add 25,000 XPRES-T EVs to its lineup of taxis.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Tata Motors and Uber will see the American ride-hailing add 25,000 units of the Tigor EV's commercial variant to its premium category service in India.

Tata will deliver the 25,000 units of the XPRES-T EV to Uber in a phased manner. The first units of the Tata XPRES-T EVs are set to be delivered this month to Uber.

Uber will be deploying its new line of Tata XPRES-T EVs as part of its premium category services in major cities across the country. Cities that will be served by Uber's new Tata XPRES-T EVs include Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

The Tata XPRES-T EV is the commercial vehicle version of Tata's Tigor EV and resembles its PV siblings in terms of its looks, which means it looks like a regular Tigor compact sedan.

The Tata XPRES-T is powered by lithium-ion battery packs that deliver a range of either 315km or 277km on a single charge as per the ARAI testing cycle. The battery pack powers a single electric motor producing 40.2bhp and 105Nm of peak torque.

Speaking about what is the largest delivery of EVs to a fleet operator in India, Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia said, "Uber is committed to bringing sustainable, shared mobility to India, and this partnership with Tata Motors is a major milestone on that journey. It represents the largest EV partnership yet between an automaker and a ridesharing platform in India. It will supercharge the transition to zero emissions on the Uber platform as we work towards building a sustainable future. We are committed to doing our part to bring down the barriers to going electric by working with industry partners that are leading the change."

Commenting on the partnership, Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility said, "In line with our commitment to grow sustainable mobility in the country, we are delighted to partner with Uber, India's leading ridesharing platform. Offering customers our environmentally friendly EV ride experiences via Uber's Premium Category service, will accelerate the adoption of green and clean personal ride sharing. The XPRES-T EV is a very attractive option both for customers and operators. While enhanced safety, silent and premium in cabin experience provides the customers with a relaxed ride, the fast charging solution, driving comfort and the cost effectiveness of the EV makes it an attractive business proposition for our fleet partners. This partnership will further cement our market position in the fleet segment."
