Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept Previews The Hydrogen-Powered Future Of Le Mans
Japanese carmaker Toyota has revealed the GR H2 Racing Concept at the centenary edition of the Le Mans 24-hour race.
The Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept is our first sneak peek at the Hydrogen class of Le Mans endurance racers that will hit the iconic Circuit de la Sarthe circuit in western France in 2026.
The upcoming Hydrogen class of racers will see both fuel cell-powered racers as well those running a hydrogen engine compete with the other prototypes in the greatest endurance in the world.
The Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept uses a hydrogen engine and a hybrid system but any details about the figures produced by the powerplant are still scarce considering that the class of Le Mans racers is still three years away.
However, this won't be the first time that Toyota has used Hydrogen to power one of its race cars. The Japanese carmaker has been pushing hydrogen as an alternate fuel in both production and race cars.
In recent times, Toyota has entered a hydrogen engine-powered Corolla in the Japanese Super Taikyu endurance racing series as well as in the IDEMITSU 1500 Super Endurance 2022 race in Thailand.
The Japanese carmaker's Mirai has been roaming the streets of cities around the globe for a few years now showing the way a hydrogen fuel vehicle cell works in the real world.
So it comes as no surprise that Toyota is jumping headlong into the upcoming Hydrogen class with the GR H2 Racing Concept. The concept car could easily fit in this year's centenary race's grid as it measures 5,100mm long and 2,050mm wide.
The GR H2 concept car takes inspiration from Toyota's recent Le Mans-winning TS050 and GR010 race cars for its design. However, the cockpit area looks quite a lot narrower.
The concept car also does not seem to lack anything when it comes to aerodynamics. There is a massive rear wing and quite a bit of visible underbody aero elements that should keep it glued to the tarmac if it decides to race on the Circuit de la Sarthe.
Thoughts About The Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept
The Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept shows us what hydrogen-powered Le Mans Prototypes could look like when the class starts racing in 2026. If the Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept is anything to go by, we can expect the craziness of the world's famous 24-hour race to continue way into the future.
