Tesla Clears Another Hurdle In India: Agrees To Set up Vendor Base - Report
Tesla's entry into India may have just moved past a massive barrier claims a new report. The article claims that Tesla has agreed in principle to the Government of India's suggestion to set up a vendor base in the country.
The agreement also will see Tesla start local assembly of its cars, here in India. As per the report, the Indian government will allow Tesla to first start local assembly and later set up a local vendor base in the country.
The publication also states that the Indian Government has asked Tesla to submit a roadmap. This will show the timeframe needed by the American EV manufacturer to establish a local supply chain.
The report also states that once Tesla agrees to set up a manufacturing facility in India and submits its timeline to meet levels for indigenous parts, the government may open up a modified PLI scheme for EVs and battery cell chemistry which should help the American firm take advantage of the benefits on offer.
This isn't the first time that Tesla has come close to entering India. The American carmaker has over the years shown signs of coming to India which is one of the fastest-growing car markets in the world.
However, despite coming excruciatingly close in 2021, when a few of its cars were even seen testing on our roads, Elon Musk's electric car company has always seemed to encounter a roadblock.
One of the biggest reasons for this has been Tesla's demands in the past to slash import duties on completely built cars to 40 per cent. This duty is currently at 60 per cent for cars under $40,000 (Rs 32.96 lakh) and 100 per cent for cars that breach that mark.
Thoughts About The Latest Tesla To India News
Tesla coming to India has been rumoured for long enough that it has become somewhat of a running joke among the Indian automotive community. Hopefully, this new agreement and the fact that Tesla isn't pressing for the duty cut will turn this long running joke and rumor into something that we in India will see quite a lot of on our roads.
