Porsche Mission X Concept Previews The 918's All-Electric Successor

German sportscar manufacturer Porsche has revealed the Concept X as part of its 75th Anniversary celebrations. The stunning, low-slung, Porsche Mission X concept gives us a first glimpse at a potential successor to the 918 hypercar.

Revealed 75 years to the day the first Porsche 956 'No. 1' Roadster hit the streets, the Mission X is just a concept car for now. However, given Porsche's track record, expect a Mission X-based EV, potentially a 918 successor to hit the roads in a few years.

The sleek and stunning-looking Porsche Mission X EV measures approximately 4.5 metres long, two metres wide and less than 1.2 metres tall. The electric Mission X concept has a 2.73 metre-long wheelbase and sits on 20-inch wheels at the front with 21-inch units at the rear.

In terms of its looks, the Mission X pays tribute to some of Porsche's racers from Le Mans. The headlights look like they've plucked off one of the firm's older cars and modernised to current Le Mans standards.

The doors are hinged on the A-Pillars and open upward and outward just like those on the 917 racer. While the elongated rear plays host to a full-width lightbar-style brake light.

The Mission X is also the first time we see Porsche's latest iteration of its logo. The new logo can be found on the bonnet, wheels and steering wheel of the Mission X Concept.

The interiors of the new Mission X concept are focused on the racing-inspired nature of the EV. The carbon fibre seats feature Andalusia Brown and Kalahari Grey leather upholstery.

The racing-inspired steering wheel also features Kalahari Grey highlights. There are displays for both the driver and passenger which are focused on getting their strapped-in occupants all the race data they need for the track.

Mission X has been given four massive technical targets, which must be making the engineers at Zuffenhausen rub their hands together in glee.

The four technical vision targets for Mission X will ensure that any production version will be one of the fastest cars in the world on the road and when plugged into the charger.

The Mission X aims to be the fastest road-legal car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. To help it achieve this feat, Porsche is targeting at power to weight ratio of 1PS/kg (0.986bhp/kg).

The Mission X will also have the ability to produce more downforce than the current 911 GT3 RS sports car. The 911 (992) GT3 RS generates 860 kilogrammes of downforce at 285km/h.

Not content with shaming other cars on the Ring, Porsche is upping the charging setup on the Mission X to a 900V architecture. This will help the Mission X charge twice as quickly as the Taycan Turbo S, which takes 22.5 minutes to go from 10 to 80 per cent charge with its 800V electric architecture.

These are quite lofty goals, but knowing Porsche and its track record we expect the Mission X to achieve them with ease.

Thoughts About The Porsche Mission X

The Porsche Mission X is our first look at Porsche's 4th hypercar after the 958, Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder. And just like its predecessors, the Porsche Mission X promises to move the goalposts once again in terms of both performance and technology.
