Maruti Jimny 5-door Gets ADAS For Australian Market: Why Not In India?
Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door has been teased for launch in Australia. The SUV will go on sale alongside its 3-door variant in the country. The Jimny 5-door will go on sale with some of the ADAS features offered as standard.
Cars sold in the Australian market are required to be equipped with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as standard. Due to the new regulation, the upcoming Jimny 5-door in Australia will be equipped with a couple of Advanced Driver Assisted systems.
The Jimny 5-door will feature AEB, lane departure warning and high-beam assist as well. Apart from these new feature additions, the plucky off-roader will remain the same as the Jimny 5-door sold in India. In fact, both versions of Jimny are made-in-India and are exported to the Australian market.
Maruti Suzuki is not offering the Advanced Driver Assistance System even in the top-spec variant of the Jimny 5-door in India. We suspect the reason could be the cost as offering these features could see an increase in price of around Rs 1 lakh. However, Maruti could introduce these features in India at a later date enhancing the safety of the off-road SUV.
The Jimny 5-door variant is expected to go on sale in Australia sometime around November. The SUV in its top-trim GLX guise is expected to be priced at around AUD 30,000. The 3-door variant of the Jimny is currently on sale in Australia with a starting price tag of AUD 26,000.
Speaking about Jimny's success in India, the off-road SUV has received over 30,000 bookings. Despite the controversial pricing, the Jimny is off to a great start with deliveries underway across the country.
Maruti Suzuki offers the Jimny in two variants: Zeta and Alpha. The base Zeta variant with a manual gearbox is priced at Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom). While the top-spec Alpha variant with an automatic gearbox is priced at Rs 15.05 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it the most affordable off-road 4x4 SUV on sale in India.
The Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine producing 103bhp and 134.2Nm of peak torque. The engine comes with a choice of either a 4-speed automatic torque converter or a traditional 5-speed manual gearbox. All variants of the Jimny are equipped with Suzuki's All-Grip Pro 4x4 system with a limited brake differential.
Speaking about the mileage, the manual variant of the Jimny returns a claimed fuel efficiency of 16.94km/l, which is slightly more than the mileage from the automatic variant at 16.39km/l. This gives the Maruti Suzuki Jimny a range of more than 650 kilometres on its 40-litre fuel tank.
The top-spec variant of the Jimny comes equipped with a 9-inch infotainment system that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features include a sound system tuned by Arkamys, auto climate control, 4 seats, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and more.
Thoughts About The Maruti Jimny 5-door Getting ADAS For Australian Market
The Jimny is a proven off-roader around the world. The 5-door version is expected to be treated the same with its excellent off-road ability. However, due to the newer regulations in Australia, the brand is forced to offer enhanced safety on the SUV. This could help bring a lot more features to the Jimny sold in India later.
