Mahindra Thar 5-Door Spotted Testing: Rear-Wheel Drive Variant?
Mahindra is currently working on a 5-door version of the Thar SUV which is expected to hit the market soon. A test mule of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-Door was recently spotted testing by an automotive vlogger on Youtube.
The video shows off a fully camouflaged version of the SUV ahead of it heading to the hills for further testing. The vlogger though was able to give us a glimpse into the interior of the 5-door version of the Thar which does reveal a rather important detail about the SUV.
As seen in the video, the 5-door version of the Thar looks almost identical to its three-door sibling, except for the extended length of the SUV which is due to the extra door on each side of the SUV. Speaking of those doors the door handles for them are hidden on the C-pillar of the SUV.
However, the big detail revealed in the video about the specific test mule of the 5 door Thar seen in the video is the fact that it is the rear-wheel drive version of the SUV. This is apparent due to the lack of a low-range gearbox on the test mule of the Thar 5 door.
The video also shows that the test mule in question sports an automatic transmission rather than a manual which could suggest that this is a petrol version of the 5-door Thar. The RWD three-door version of the Thar only gets an automatic gearbox with a petrol powerplant with the diesel sporting a 6-speed manual.
The Rear Wheel Drive version of the three-door Thar was only launched last month and the new SUV sported a brand new diesel engine as well as the same petrol engine found on the all-wheel drive variant. The new diesel engine is a 1.5-litre turbocharged powerplant with 117bhp and 300Nm of torque on tap which is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The petrol engine, on the other hand, is a 2.0-litre unit with 150bhp and 320Nm of torque. The all-wheel drive Thar 3-door gets a 2.0-litre diesel engine with 130bhp and 300Nm of peak torque.
Thoughts About The Mahindra Thar 5 Door
The Mahindra Thar 5 door will see the lifestyle SUV draw the attention of a new crop of buyers looking for a bit of offroading fun while also retaining the ability to ferry the family around in relative comfort. While a launch date isn't set in stone yet, the enthusiasm for this new version of the Thar seems to be growing every day.
