Indian Government To Introduce New Car Safety Rating System, BNCAP, From October - Ensuring Vehicle Safety
Recently a survey done by the automobile manufacturer Skoda revealed that 9 out of 10 Indians prefer safer cars over fuel-efficient cars. This growing trend is a positive sign, and the government should receive the credit for standardising safety features.
As per the recent reports, the Road Transport Ministry has completed the development of India's car safety rating system, BNCAP, which rates cars based on safety parameters, and the new system might get implemented from October 1.
BNCAP stands for Bharat New Car Assessment Programme, and this system will rate new cars in the range of one to five stars based on the results. This Initiative will force car manufacturers to increase safety standards and encourage potential buyers to choose safer cars.
The BNCAP will publish the star ratings and test results on their official website once the apex committee, which the central government will establish, approves. This will allow the public to view and assess the safety performance of different car models.
In the initial phase, the BNCAP certification will be optional, and the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can either provide the samples for testing or the authority can randomly choose them from dealerships.
Domestic car manufacturers can benefit greatly from this Initiative. They can eliminate the need to send samples abroad for testing and star rating processes, as they are expensive and time-consuming.
Currently, India has mandatory crash test norms that primarily focus on structural safety, ensuring a certain level of protection. The star rating is also of superior standard and will be based on Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, and Safety Assist Technologies.
Thoughts On India's New Safety Rating System For Cars
The new safety rating system is a significant step towards improving road safety in the country. The BNCAP system draws its principles from GNCAP (Global New Car Assessment Programme, which is said to have the highest test standard.
Even though it's optional for carmakers to submit their cars for an assessment, the central government can instruct the authority to select a particular variant of a model for assessment in the interest of public safety.
