24 Hours Of Le Mans - Ferrari’s First Victory Since 1968
The 24 Hours of Le Mans took place on Saturday at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France. Ferrari claimed a historic win in the race, with Pier Guidi, James Calado, and the ex-Formula One driver Antonio Giovinazzi.
This victory of Ferrari's was their first at Le Mans since 1965 - 58 years since their last one.. With this victory, Ferrari goes back to being a title contender in the WEC, just 19 points off of Toyota.
The #51 Ferrari 499P, piloted by the three drivers, was in front for the majority of the race, dominating the pack. They had a small slip-up when the team made an extra long pit stop for repairs, but Ferrari didn't let that affect their race.
With Toyota's strength in the WEC, Ferrari found it difficult to keep up with them through the season, but this victory was a huge source of confidence for the team. Ferrari plans to go back to their winning ways in the years to come, so this victory might be foreshadowing what is yet to come.
The #50 car of Ferrari, driven by Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen, crossed the finish line in a respectable 5th position. They lost out on the podium due to lengthy repairs at night which set them back quite some time. However, they did climb up the ladder to get to the top 5.
This victory for Ferrari can be seen as a tribute to Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Ferrari at the time of their last Le Mans win. He was one of the biggest supporters when they showed their faces in the WEC again and would've been over the moon with this result!
Antonio Giovinazzi, after the race stated his happiness for the team, and said, "This is a special day for Ferrari. It's been a long time coming, but we're finally back on top at Le Mans."
Thoughts On Ferrari's Victory At The 24-Hour Of Le Mans
Ferrari's victory at one of the biggest racing events in the world was a massive one. It brought back confidence and gave the team a huge morale boost. Hopefully, this shows us an insight into Ferrari's future in the WEC, with them going back to their unmatchable excellence.
