The new CLS 450 uses the new Mercedes turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine with 48V electrics and an integrated starter/generator. The straight-six engine produces 362bhp and 500Nm of torque with the electric motor providing an additional 21.6bhp and 250Nm of torque.
The 450 is the quickest car in the new CLS lineup with a 0-100kph time of 4.8 seconds. All CLS models are electronically limited to a top speed of 250kph.
Regarding design, the all-new 2018 Mercedes CLS features a sharper design more reminiscent of the original car from 2003 but with modern Mercedes touches.
The large front grille with the Mercedes three-pointed star is flanked by angular LED headlamps with integrated boomerang-shaped DRLs and sits ahead of a long swooping bonnet.
The sides of the new 2018 CLS look a lot cleaner and features a soft shoulder line running across from the headlight to the tail lamp. The wheel arches play host to 18-inch alloy wheels.
The roofline sweeps down to the rear, which is now a lot softer than before with only the angular LED tail lamps providing some contrast. Also seen are the tailpipes, one on either side of the rear bumper.
Inside, the CLS has lost its unique look, and the interior is similar to the one found on the new E-Class. Up front, the dash is dominated by twin 12.3-inch displays for the instrument panel an infotainment system. The multi-function steering wheel is taken from the S-Class.
While the ambient lighting system is also carried over from the E-Class, the illuminated air vents which change colours whenever a hotter or colder temperature is asked for by the occupants are brand new.
The rear seats of the CLS can now seat three for the first time. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40/20/40 split to extend the size of the boot which remains unchanged at 520-litres.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The new Mercedes CLS returns to its roots with a more swoopy design that looks to once again capture the imagination of the public. With its sharp new looks and a brand new straight-six petrol engine with hybrid add-ons, the 2018 Mercedes CLS has evolved, and it looks like the German luxury carmaker has yet another winner on its hands.
